But on the following Monday, Ian Ashcroft proved me wrong. He did remember me.

When Ian walked into the shop, I was stunned to see him. I could barely get the words out to say hello, and my hands were shaking as he approached the counter.

“I heard you say you were working here now. I’m new in town and haven’t had a chance to visit this place yet. Although, I don’t know why not, because I’ve always had a sweet tooth.”

“What can I get you?” It was such a canned response, but I couldn’t manage to come up with anything better. My hair was pulled back in a tight ponytail, unwashed since Saturday. And the only make-up I’d worn tonight was the concealer to cover up the budding zit on my forehead.

“What’s your favorite?” Ian was watching me intensely, that same crooked smile as before.

Unlike the other night when he barely seemed to know who I was, now he suddenly seemed aware only of me. Like I was the single thing in the room. The only girl in the universe, like that night at his fancy house when the others were drunk.

“I like the gummy bears,” I said.

“The small ones or the big ones?” Ian asked, eyes never leaving mine. His gaze was so intense; I felt like I was on fire, under his microscope, every time he looked at me.

“The big ones,” I said, pointing into the plastic case. “The ones that taste like cinnamon.”

“I’ll take a pound of those then,” he said, smiling. I busied myself, scooping the candies, weighing them, then wrapping them in a plastic bag.

When I rang him up for the gummies, he handed them over to me. “For you, Willow. Sweets for the sweet.”

It was stupid and cheesy, but I blushed anyway, my stomach swirling.

“I thought you said you had a sweet tooth,” I said, clutching the bag of bears to my chest.

“I do, but I haven’t eaten any real food all day. Would you like to have dinner after work? I bet you get hungry while working. There’s this amazing pizza place next to my apartment…”
